After Surgery — Knee Replacement

You will likely receive 3–5 separate bills from different providers. Here is what to do with each one.

1

Wait for your Medicare Summary Notice (MSN)

First Step

Before paying any bill, wait for your Medicare Summary Notice — it arrives every 3 months by mail (or you can view it at MyMedicare.gov). It shows what Medicare approved, what Medicare paid, and what you owe. Compare every bill you receive against your MSN.

2

Check for billing errors

Common Issue

Medical billing errors are common. Look for: duplicate charges, services you didn't receive, wrong dates, or charges for items that should be bundled (like the implant). If a bill does not match your MSN, call the provider's billing department first.

3

You have the right to appeal

Your Rights

If Medicare denies a claim or pays less than expected, you can appeal. You have 120 days from receiving your MSN to file a redetermination request. Start by calling 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) or visiting Medicare.gov.

4

You can negotiate — especially with hospitals

Money Saving

Hospitals often have financial assistance programs (charity care) for patients who qualify. Even if you do not qualify, you can ask for an itemized bill and negotiate the total. Many hospitals will reduce bills or set up interest-free payment plans.

5

Ask about payment plans

Payment

You do not have to pay a large bill all at once. Ask the hospital and each provider's billing office: Do you offer a payment plan? Most do, and many are interest-free. Never put a medical bill on a high-interest credit card before exploring this option.
